CALL TO ACTION!
When we founded BBTF in 2016, our immediate goal was to give playwrights a professional platform for their new work in a supportive, nurturing environment with the lowest financial threshold possible in NYC. But our long term dream has always been to remove that threshold altogether and underwrite their production costs.
In the years that followed, we witnessed the devastating shutdown of the industry because of COVID from which theatres still haven't recovered. We thought that would affect some change within the industry--at the very least, lower rental prices. We were wrong. Prices actually went up.
We marched in the protests for equality following the senseless death of George Floyd. Certainly, this horrifying incident that turned a powerful light on the appalling inequities rife within the current capital structures INCLUDING the theatre industry would evoke some change? Again, we were wrong. Underserved people continue to be unheard, as it's more difficult than ever to get work produced by BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and gender fluid folks, not to mention trans writers.
The tide is going in the wrong direction.
For years, we were told to start a nonprofit. Well, when you work in the arts, you find out pretty quickly about something not-so-jokingly known as the nonprofit mafia. That's right. It's the nonprofits that operate like corporations. And they've tied up the majority of public funding. Up until now, we were self-reliant, using on our own funds, donations and sponsorships from those who share our dream of creating a new model for playwrights--one that helps offset costs for them but doesn't compromise professionalism and the caliber of support we give them in the process of learning how to self produce.
This year, we relented and founded our nonprofit called TCB Theatre Productions. (TCB is the acronym for Taking Care of Business, because that's what we do. Shout out to Elvis.) We'd love for you to join us in our mission to bring new work to the stage. Please use the button below to make your contribution. And now you can write off your donation on your taxes. We'll send you a tax-deductible receipt acknowledging your contribution.
Let's create the change we want to see.
BROADWAY BOUND THEATRE FESTIVAL is produced by TCB Theatre Productions, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to the empowerment of self-producing performance artists, including stage productions of plays, musicals, solo work, puppetry, improv and other forms of live stagework.
